What is RUCO?

Repurpose Used Cooking Oil (RUCO) is an initiative launched by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Its goal is to enable the collection and conversion of used cooking oil to biodiesel.

Why Proper Collection is Important

During frying, several properties of oil are altered. Repeated frying leads to changes in its physical and chemical properties resulting in the formation of Total Polar Compounds (TPC), which makes the oil unfit for human consumption.

Proper collection ensures this toxic waste does not re-enter the food chain and is instead safely transformed into eco-friendly biodiesel.

Government Guidelines

  • TPC Limit: FSSAI mandates that TPC should be a maximum of 25%.
  • Mandatory Disposal: Food Business Operators consuming >50 liters/day must maintain records and dispose of it to authorized agencies only.
  • No Illegal Sale: Selling used oil to unregistered buyers is a punishable offense.
